Hyette worked as a farmer and steamfitter.  "Steamfitters are pipe fitters who have chosen to specialize in pipes that carry high-pressure steam, water and other elements.  The job of steamfitter is strenuous and is not without risk; burns, falls and cuts are among the injuries commonly suffered by steamfitters.  While on the job, steamfitters must perform tasks that require a variety of tools and skills."
