  • Goodnight, Jane Mozella Sims

Mrs. Jennie Goodnight.  Kannapolis, Aug. 29. - Mrs. Jennie Mozelle Goodnight, 78, resident of Kannapolis for 50 years, died late last night at a Mooresville hospital following a three-week illness.  Funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member, by the pastor, Rev. John L. Fain, Jr.  Interment will follow in the New Bethpage Cemetery.  She was born in Cabarrus County.  Surviving are her husband, John McCray Goodnight; five children, Claude Goodnight of Landis, Jay Goodnight of Kannapolis, Mrs. Carl Hinson of China Grove, Mrs. Earl Fink of Concord, and Mrs. Jack Plott of Hamptoon, Va.; three stepchildren, Flynn Goodnight of Mooresville, Mrs. Gipp Winecoff of Kannapolis, Mack Goodnight of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Preston Sims of Kannapolis; a sister, Mrs. S. S. Overcash of China Grove; 25 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Kannapolis - Mrs. Zelma Sims Lisk, 79, homemaker, died April 20, 1995, at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital in Concord. Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home.  Visitation is 7 to 8:30 tonight.  Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Lib Cline; brothers, William Sims, Foy Sims; sisters, Mrs. Laura Brown, Mrs. Estelle Adams, Mrs. Mabel White.  Memorials may be made to Bethpage Presbyterian church, 5647 Pagemont Drive., Kannapolis, NC 28081.  The family will be at her daughter's home, 5855 Pagemont Dr.

  • Overcash, Katherine Vonbora Sims

Mrs. Smiley Overcash.  Salisbury, Feb. 17 - Mrs. Smiley S. (Granny) Overcash, 90, of Route 1, China Grove, died Tuesday morning at Patterson's Rest Home at Spencer.  She had been in declining health for the past year.  She was born in Cabarrus County.  She was a member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church.  Survivors: four sons, Lloyd, Clay, and Vill Overcash, all of Route 1, China Grove, and Ralph Overcash of Kannapolis; five daughters, Mrs. J. Doyle Lingle and Mrs. Harland Deal of Lenoir, Mrs. Homer Freeze of Winston-Salem, Mrs. H. S. Lipe and Mrs. Raymond Whitaker, both of Route 1, China Grove; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.  Funeral 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Enoch Lutheran Church by the Rev. Claude V. Deal.  Burial in church cemetery.

  • Pickard, Thomas Gales, Jr.

Death of Little Child.  Thomas Gale Pickard, Jr., 7-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Picksard, died Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. Pickard's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Sims, two miles west of the city, of ptomaine poisoning.  The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr. J. M. Grier.

  • Sims, Frances E. Moody

Funeral of Mrs. J. M. Sims at 4 This Afternoon.  Sudden Death of Mrs. Frances Moody Sims Early Sunday Morning Brings Sadness to Many Friends - Was 67 Years of Age.  Mrs. Frances Moody Sims, wife of Mr. J. M. Sims died suddenly at her home on South Boulevard in Dilworth Sunday morning at 4 o'clock.  Death came as a shock to the family and friends of the deceased.  While Mrs. Sims had been in poor health for a number of years, she was apparently as well as usualwhen she retired Saturday night.  Death was due to an attack of apoplexy.  Mrs. Sims prior to her marriage was Miss Frances E. Moody, daughter of William Moody and Mrs. Martha Barber Moody of Lenoir.  At the time of her marriage she was making her home in this city with an uncle, Mr. D. L. Moody, who died a number of years ago.  The deceased was 67 years of age and is survived by her husband, four daughters and two grandchildren, Mrs. Arthur H. Wearn, Mrs. Claude A. Matthews, Mrs. Perry C. McGinn and Miss Mary Sims, and Masters Ashton Matthews and James Wearn.  A sister, Mrs. Rebecca Taylor of Hickory, and two half-brothers, Messrs. M. F. Kirby of this city and John W. Kirby of Marion, also survive.  Mrs. Sims was a consistent member of the First Presbyterian church and at all times bore her suffering with a Christian fortitude.  She had many friends who will learn with sorrow of her sudden passing.  The funeral will take place at the residence this afternoon at 4 o'clock.  The services will be conducted by Rev. D. H. Rolston, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Gilbert T. Rowe, pastor of Tryon Street Methodist church.

  • Sims, Isabella DeWeese

A Good Woman.  Mrs. Isabella Sims the Last of a Remarkable Family.  The Concord Tribune has the following: "Mrs. Isabella Sims died last night at her home in No. 4 township.  Mrs. Sims was the last of a very remarkable family.  She was the daughter of Mr. Isaiah Deweese and there were 14 children, all with few exceptions, living to be old people.  Mrs. Sims was born February 26, 1814, and had she lived ten days longer would have been 87 years of age.  Her husband, Mr. James A. Sims, died ten years ago at the advanced age of 77, they having lived together for more than 60 years.  Of the family of 14 children 11 were daughters and 3 sons, the oldest being born in 1780.  Mrs. Sims was the mother of six children, four of whom are living.  Among the four being Mr. John A. Sims, of this city.  She was very hale and hearty and very active up till the time of the attack which, after several weeks, resulted in death.  She was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian church and had been for years, connected with the Presbyterian Church, having been for many years a member of Poplar Tent church.  Mrs. Sims was a pious, consistent woman, full of richness and experience.  Her life has been a long and fruitful one.  The funeral and burial will be to-morrow at Bethpage church."  As was published in yesterday's Observer, Mrs. Sims was a mother of Mr. J. M. Sims, of this city.

  • Sims, James Anderson

Deaths of Two Old Men.  On Saturday about 2 o'clock, Mr. Jas. A. Sims, of No. 3, whose illness with pneumonia was noted in these columns, passed away.  Mr. Sims was a good man and highly respected by all who knew him.  He was the father of County Treasurer Sims.  He had lived over his three score and ten, being 77 years of age at his death.

  • Sims, James Monroe

Large Crowd Attends Funeral of Mr. Sims.  Services Held in First Presbyterian Church Yesterday Afternoon at 5 O'clock.  Dressed in the beautiful grey uniform of the Confederacy, with the "In Memoriam" badge upon his chest, James Monroe Sims was laid to rest in Elmwood cemetery after a simple but impressive ceremony, conducted by Rev. Albert Sidney Johnston, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Henry Grady Hardin, pastor of the Tryon Street Methodist church, at the First Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock.  The services were attended by a large crowd of Mr. Sims' former friends, there being a large delegation of the members of the Mecklenburg camp of Confederate Veterans and representatives of the Stonewall Jackson chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Julia Jackson chapter of the Children of the Confederacy.  The pulpit of the church was banked high with floral tributes from the friends of Mr. Sims and from the Veterans and the Daughters and Children of the Confederacy.  The simple, beautiful wreath of the Confederacy was placed on the casket, together with various other wreaths.  Mr. Sims died Saturday at noon at his home, 1420 South boulevard, after a short illness.  He was 81 years of age, and was treasurer of the Mecklenburg camp of the Confederate veterans.  A quartet composed of Mrs. HJ. H. Armbrust, Mrs. H. N. Pharr, C. W. Rankin and W. W. Orr sang two songs during the services, "Rock of Ages" and "Asleep in Jesus." Pallbearers were: Active, Billy Wilcox, Jesse Oldham, George Rose, Tom Smith, Will Ward, Walter Alexander, C. M. Carson, Dr. R. L. Gibbon; honorary, the members of the Mecklenburg camp of the Confederate veterans.

  • Sims, John Allison

J. A. Sims Passes.  Father-in-Law of J. H. Mewborn Died After Long Illness at Kinston.  (Special to Daily News.) Kinston, Sept. 5. - J. A. Sims, father of Mrs. J. Hyman Mewborn, died at the home of Mrs. Mewborn, about eight miles from this city, of heart trouble.  Mr. Sims, with his wife, came here from Concord with an idea that his health, which had been impaired for some time, would be improved, and the end, while sudden, was not unexpected.  He was a prominent farmer of Cabarrus cunty, and was the father of several children besides Mrs. Mewborn.  Mr. Sims was 65 years of age, and was a member of the Presbyterian church at Concord.  The remains were taken to that city, Mr. and Mrs. Mewborn accompanying the body home.

  • Sims, Martha Rebecca

Martha Rebecca Sims Succumbs at Concord.  Special to The Observer.  Concord, April 14. - Martha Rebecca Sims, daughter of the late James Madison Sims and Isabel Dewese Sims, died Saturday night at the age of 87 years.  She was born January 9, 1833, in the upper section of Cabarrus county, where she lived with her parents until their passing. In 1900 she came to make her home with her brother, the late John A. Sims.  Since his death she has continued to live in Concord with Mrs. Sims.  The funeral was conducted by Dr. Jesse C. Rowan from the home of Mrs. Sims on White street Monday afternoon.  Interment was in Oakwood cemetery.  She was a sister of the late J. M. Sims, of Charlotte.

  • Sims, Prudence Killough

Died, in Rowan County, at the residence of Thomas Varner, on the 17th ultimo. Mrs. Prudence Sims, consort of Nathaniel Sims, Esq., of Mecklenburg, aged 52 years, 10 months and 1 day.  Mrs. S. was attacked with the Pneumonia just five days previous to her death.  She had been from early life a consistant member of the Presbyterian Church, and died in the hope of happiness in another world.  She has left a disconsolate husband and ten children, with a numerous circle of connexions and friends to lament her death.

  • Sims, Scott Frieze

Scott Sims. Concord - Funeral services for Scott Frieze Sims, 67, of Hamilton Ave. will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Bethpage Presbyterian Church by Rev. Milton Foust and Rev. Georse Hinson.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, until taken to the church at the funeral hour.  Mr. Sims died at 7 a.m. Sunday at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital after being seriously ill three weeks.  He was born in Cabarrus August 28, 1898, son of the late John A. Sims and Mrs. Etta Frieze Sims.  He was a retired pipefitter and had lived in Richmond, Va. for many years, returning to Concord five years ago.  Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Flossie Campbell Sims; one son, William R. Sims of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, William, Tom, and J. Foy Sims, all of Kannapolis and five sisters, Mrs. Raymond White, Mrs. James Adams, and Mrs. Ray Brown all of Kannapolis, Mrs. Fred Sisk of Concord, and Mrs. J. C. Simpson of Durham.

S. A. Sims Dies After Illness.  Stony Point. - S. A. Sims, a policeman in Stony Point some 25 years ago, is dead.  Mr. Sims died Friday night in Huntersville after a long period of declining health.  He was in his 70's.  Funeral rites will be at 3 o'clock Sunday from Ramah Presbyterian church.  He had the distinction of being this town's first policeman.
